Every Living Thing Gift Set (Audio Cassette), the story of James Herriot's veterinary practice in Yorkshire

A master storyteller continues the charming account of his experiences as veterinarian in rural Yorkshire. And although there are more cats and dogs as patients than before, there are plenty of large farm animals to deal with, frequently during the middle of the night. The detailed but succinct descriptions of people, places, and animals are a delight. Herriot’s unusual ability to identify individual characters, both human and four-legged, brings them to life–even for the most urban American. The endearing strand weaving all episodes together is the constant devotion of man to animal and animal to man. Chapters are short, the pace is rapid, and the stories are very easy to read–perfect for unmotivated readers. The author’s keen sense of humor will bring smiles to the faces of YAs, particularly when he tells a joke on himself. Nonfiction at its most entertaining best.

The late Alf Wight aka James Herriot left a legacy of books that excites readers to this day (and I presume will do so for decades more.) His gentle, self-deprecating style of humor and the portraits of the Yorkshire Dales farmers and country people are amusing and interesting.

The four books, named after a hymn "All Creatures Great and Small" are joined by this fifth volume with similar stories. James (as Alf called himself) now has his own practice in Skeldale House, is married with two kids. The stories are very similar to the first four, with goof-ups, miracles, and funny tales. Somehow, these stories are not quite as hilarious as the first set, possibly because Mr. Herriot had written up most of the good stuff, or to represent the seriousness of raising two kids and having his own practice and being a settled man rather than a raw youth just out on his own. Nonetheless, if you lapped up all the "Creature" books, as I did, and you mourn the loss of Dr. Wight, who passed away in the 90’s, then you will want to read these stories and vicariously enjoy more of the daily life of a country vet. Veterinarians Need To Be Included In Proposition 2 Implementation

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) thanks the citizens of California for taking the time to consider and vote on Proposition 2. Now that it’s passed, extra care-and the advice of veterinarians and animal welfare scientists-must be employed to ensure its implementation doesn’t hurt the animals it’s intended to help.

“It was encouraging to see voters in California take such an interest in animal welfare,” says Dr. Ron DeHaven, CEO of the AVMA. “Now that the ballot initiative has passed, veterinarians and animal welfare scientists must be involved in its implementation to make sure that resulting changes in animal housing actually improve conditions for the animals they are intended to help. If we’re not careful, animal health and welfare problems could be precipitated that are as significant as the concerns Proposition 2 aspires to address.

Shallot Poisoning in Dogs and Cats

The cause of the shallot poisoning in dogs and cats was the inability of the body to produce enzyme that could digest this material. The dose of poisoning depended on the animal size. Shallot poisoning caused anemia in Heinz body. Heinz body is a small bubble that stood out from red blood cells and could be seen when the cell was colored. This bubble was the weak spot in red blood cells and caused the decline of the living period and dropped or the red blood cells will outbreak before the time. The effect of shallot poison stayed same although being given in a raw, cooked or drought. Hemolytic happened several days after the shallot was eaten (hematocrit lowered around 5 days after being eaten). Every day shallot giving could cause the cumulative effect of the Heinz body continually opposed the single opening with the wide gap, until the following opening, gave time of bones marrow to form again red blood cells that broke before the time. Moreover the shallot could also cause liver damage, vomited, diarrhea, and uncolored urine. All About Pet Insurance

The purpose of pet insurance is to mitigate the risk of incurring significant expense to treat ill or injured pets. As veterinary medicine is increasingly employing expensive medical techniques and drugs, and owners have higher expectations for their pets’ health care and standard of living than previously, the market for pet insurance has increased. Most pet insurance services allow credit cards to deal the transaction.

Some providers will cover the cost of specified complementary treatments if they’re deemed necessary for your pets recuperation after sickness or injury. Many insurers will pay out compensation for the loss or death of your pet and some may also contribute to the cost of cremation or burial. If you are planning to take your pet abroad at some point in the future its important to ensure that the protection of their pet insurance policy is extended overseas.

Most pet insurance providers allow you to reduce the cost of your policy by increasing the excess you will need to cover in the event of a claim and this can be a good option providing your pet is in good health and you set the excess at an affordable amount. Money.co.uk provides a good comparison of the best pet insurance quotes online. You could find the best protection for your pets and save on the cost in minutes. Whether you have a dog, cat, horse, rabbit or more exotic pet, they can help you find the best pet health insurance policy for the best price without the stress.

Dog Anal Sac Disorders

Dog anal sac disorders Dog Anal Sac Disorders may be caused by androgen stimulation since they occur predominantly in males. Combined androgenic and estrogenic influences may be involved because when they do occur in females, spayed females are more commonly affected than sexually intact females. The others predisposing factors include chronically soft feces, recent diarrhea, excessive glandular secretions, and poor muscle tone; retained secretions may lead to infection and abscessation; small breed dogs, including miniature poodles, toy poodles, and chihuahuas are reportedly predisposed to anal sac carcinoma.

  • Dog Bathing Tips

It’s a myth that you should rarely bathe your dog. Show dogs are usually bathed weekly and are in fantastic condition. Bathe to your heart’s content. The key is to brush often (daily for some dogs) to keep the natural oils distributed in the coat. The other key is that when you shampoo, rinse thoroughly and dry thoroughly. In the case of a long or thick-coated dog this usually means using a dog blow dryer (which doesn’t deliver heat – very important, only powerful air) and drying right down to the skin (brush as you blow to “fluff” the dog). Nails are easier to trim after bathing as they’re softened up. There are lots of “self-service” bathing stations in pet stores these days if you don’t want to make a mess of your own bathroom or don’t want to use the yard. You can use the following products to bath your dogs: Pet Aromatic Woodsy Woof Dog Bath, Booster Bath Plastic Dog Bath, Indoor – Outdoor Pet Shower

  • Brushing, Combing, Trimming and Nails for your dogs
Brushing not only makes your pet’s coat look nice and shiny. It is vital for skin and overall health and provides you with the opportunity to spend some quality time with your dog. You will be able to check your dog closely for any problems during brushing. Move the hair aside and examine the skin closely for signs of flea, ticks or skin irritations. Check for mats, tangles, dandruff, etc. When you brush, do a section at a time, brushing down to the skin on thick-coated dogs. To avoid coat breakage, only brush clean coats and mist with water or a mixture of water and coat conditioner. Mats and tangles can be carefully removed with de-matters and rakes or, if necessary, carefully cut out. If you are finding lots of mats, it’s a sure sign you are not grooming frequently enough. Don’t bathe until all mats and tangles are out. Combs are useful for the fine coat that grows around ears and for feathering. Spend time with puppies and newly adopted dogs to get them gradually and gently used t  grooming procedures. Go slowly and patiently and dispense plenty of praise and high value treats. Learn where he likes to be combed and brushed and where he doesn’t. All dogs have sensitive areas that need to be groomed a little more gently and carefully than others. By paying special attention to these areas, you will help make your dog more comfortable while being groomed, and he will not resist future grooming sessions. You will also become familiar with areas that he enjoys having groomed. This is helpful if you need to calm him during stressful times such as veterinary visits. Short and medium-coated dogs must be brushed once a week and have their nails trimmed. It’s also a good idea to scissor overgrown hair that grows between the foot pads and, if desired, around the food to give a nice, tidy appearance. Don’t worry if you botch it the first time. It’ll grow back and you’ll get better with practice. Even if you decide not to trim feet, check between foot pads during grooming for foxtails (common in California), ticks, bumps and debris. Wipe tearstains with a cotton ball moistened with warm water. Check inside the ears for debris, ticks or signs of inflammation. Wipe with a ear cleaning solution for dogs, if desired, or a mixture of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Dogs with skin folds, such as bulldogs, Pekes, Shih-Tzus and chows need these cleaned, preferably daily, with a moist cotton ball, and then dried with a dry cotton ball to avoid dermatitis and fungal infections. Trim nails every week or two. Brush teeth weekly with products for dogs to avoid tartar build-up, which not only causes bad breath but can necessitate professional cleaning under general anesthetic if allowed to build up. Longer coated dogs should be brushed more often, ideally every day. No dog should have to endure mats or a dirty, itchy coat. If long-coated dogs dirty themselves during elimination, strategic trimming can prevent this in future.

  • Vet Software Review: VIA, the Veterinary Information Assistant
In order to manage the overwhelming volume of data a hospital generates, veterinarians had to rely upon software to function as cash registers and treatment reminder systems. It includes detailed medical records, accurate inventory, precise financial books, organized schedules. Nowadays, it is not difficult anymore, VIA has it. VIA™, the Veterinary Information Assistant, is a leading practice management solution that allows veterinarians to stay in control of their critical medical, financial, and back-office information.  VIA is medically oriented software that uses hospital workflow concepts to improve operating efficiencies, staff communication, and patient care. VIA logoWith VIA you can stay on top of your critical information to improve productivity and the financial performance of your hospital, such as: Generate graphical treatment flowsheets that automatically capture fees; Eliminate missed charges through medically driven invoicing; Use electronic whiteboards to monitor hospitalized patient treatment tasks; Improve client relations, employee satisfaction, and operating efficiency; View Digital Radiographs and transmit orders to DICOM radiology equipment; Capture handwritten notes, drawings, and consent signatures; Access your information from home to review medical cases and finances, etc. The Accounts section provides access to all information related to your client accounts: client and patient files, medical notes, medical history, estimates, invoices, and transaction history. vet-software-screenshot Patient medical history can be viewed by individual office visit, enabling you to quickly scan all reasons for visit to drill down on a specific case.  The Preview Pane improves readability by automatically displaying pertinent medical information.  SOAP notes, images, video, services, drug labels, lab graphs, and vaccine information are previewed as you scroll, eliminating unnecessary clicks to see attachments.  History can be filtered, for instance, to compare lab results from several visits at once. With VIA’s SOAP notes (Subjective-Objective-Assessment-Plan) you can document every action that occurs during a patient visit, from the initial client communications to your final diagnoses and plan, as well as store vitals, physical exams, invoiced charges, digital images, sound, and video. vet-software-screenshot2 Up until now, this type of detailed information took valuable time to record either in handwritten notes or on a computer.  VIA streamlines that process by allowing you to define key phrases, abnormalities, and examination parameters, so you can generate precise, thorough medical notes with only a few clicks of the mouse. VIA provides an industry first DICOM compliant solution that integrates billing, modality worklist request, PACS querying, and image viewing, all from within your practice management system.  VIA’s DICOM Communication and Imaging module allows for seamless integration with Digital Radiography, Computed Radiography, Ultrasound, MRI, and other imaging modalities and PACS (picture archiving and communications) systems. vet-software-screenshot3 Generate image study requests and review completed studies.  Access high resolution DICOM images directly from a patient’s medical history.  Use VIA’s image enhancement tools to view both bone and soft tissue from a single image.  View images from any workstation in your hospital.  Compare and contrast historical cases by querying the PACS archive.  Electronically transfer your images for consultation with a specialist or colleague. VIA is a complete management system, with functionality encompassing user security to advanced data querying and backup capabilities. VIA is completely problem oriented with the medical record in a SOAP format. It is versatile; can be used by the computer illiterate, but can be customized up to the computer savvy. VIA Safe WebThe new feature is VIA Safe™. VIA Safe™ is the automated online backup service by Sound-Eklin that creates a secure, off-site backup of your VIA™ Practice Management System every day. VIA Safe utilizes your internet connection to automatically send a backup of your hospital data to a secure, off-site data center.  VIA Safe creates an encrypted, incremental backup of your data every day and runs completely unattended. You will receive email notifications from VIA Safe to inform you when a backup has occurred or if a problem was encountered. The powerful Data Mining tool lets you perform database queries  across all of your medical, financial, and clinical data.  Analyze data to spot trends, relate medical cases, find your highest and lowest revenue clients, and generate any type of search you desire.  vet-software-screenshot4You can even search for medical pictures, radiographs, or ultrasound images.  Search variables can be memorized for later use, and information exported directly to Microsoft Excel for further analysis. Reviewing financial transactions is a snap using VIA’s Financial Registers.  Just choose a financial account and a date range and all transactions linked to that account appear.  Simply click on any transaction to view or edit it and your books are instantly recalculated and updated. • How do cats get infected with the virus that causes Feline Panleukopenia
Feline PanleukopeniaFeline Panleukopenia Infection occurs when cats come in contact with the blood, urine, stool, nasal secretions, or even the fleas from infected cats. A cat can also become infected without ever coming in direct contact with an infected cat. Bedding, cages, food dishes and the hands or clothing of people who handle the infected cat may harbor the virus and transmit it to other cats. It is, therefore, very important to isolate infected cats. Any materials used on or for infected cats should not be used or allowed to come in contact with other cats, and people handling infected cats should practice proper hygiene to prevent spreading the infection. The virus that causes Feline Panleukopenia is difficult to destroy and resistant to many disinfectants. At room temperatures, virus present in a cat’s environment can still infect other cats for up to one year. Ideally, unvaccinated cats should not be allowed into an area where an infected cat has been, even if the area has been disinfected. Pregnant female cats that are infected with the virus and become ill (even if they do not appear seriously ill) may give birth to kittens with severe brain damage. In most cases, if a cat recovers from Feline Panleukopenia, it will not infect other cats through direct contact. source: avma brochure. image source: www.pbase.com
