    The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) thanks the citizens of California for taking the time to consider and vote on Proposition 2. Now that it’s passed, extra care-and the advice of veterinarians and animal welfare scientists-must be employed to ensure its implementation doesn’t hurt the animals it’s intended to help. “It was encouraging to see voters in California take such an interest in animal welfare,” says Dr. Ron DeHaven, CEO of the AVMA. “Now that the ballot initiative has passed, veterinarians and animal welfare scientists must be involved in its implementation to make sure that resulting changes in animal housing actually improve conditions for the animals they are intended to help. If we’re not careful, animal health and welfare problems could be precipitated that are as significant as the concerns Proposition 2 aspires to address. Close to $16 million was spent by those promoting their views on Proposition 2 in California, which sets new standards for livestock housing in that state. Dr. DeHaven points out that the same investment could have gone a long way toward improving conditions for livestock across the country if it had been used to help develop science-based and practical solutions to animal welfare problems. “We agree that more attention needs to be paid to the behavioral well being of production animals. In doing so, we don’t want to be singularly focused on just providing additional space, as is the case with Prop 2. For example, moving laying hens to free-range production systems may allow them to engage in more species-typical behaviors, but it also increases the hens’ risks of illness and injury because it increases their exposure to disease vectors and predators,” explains Dr. Gail Golab, head of the AVMA’s Animal Welfare Division. I have to say that I think that each chapter is going to be hit or miss with me. For example, the chapter called “Chemistry and Constraints: How We Choose Our Dogs” wasn’t that enlightening. Jean even admits that there isn’t a lot of research about how we choose our dogs, and she confesses, “So, using a wholly rigorous approach — mulling it over in the shower and chatting with some dog friends — I have generated the following list of dog choice factors.” At least she’s honest, but in a book that throws Pavlov, Premack, and Pinker in the title, I figured the conclusions would be based more in research than mulling it over. On the other hand, I really enjoyed the chapter called “Observation vs Interpretation.” She contrasts the behaviorism school of thought versus other interpreters, and I’m pretty sure she’s implying folks like Caesar Millan in the later case. It’s pretty clear from the subtext that she doesn’t like the whole “the dog is displaying his dominance” school of thought. In the end, I think I’ll end up marking the chapters that are worth reading, and then taking the bibliography in the back and doing some further reading. This book is almost like a series of blog posts strung together, and although that’s not really what I look for in a book, it’s probably a good starting point for learning more about what we really know about animal behavior science.     In just the program’s second year, students in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine are proving they are among the best in the nation. The UNL Student Chapter of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners recently won first place in a competition at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners’ annual meeting. The club, composed of veterinary students in UNL’s veterinary medicine program, was honored for a case report it submitted to the AABP Student Case Presentation Competition. The report summarized club members’ findings in a project in which they studied reproductive health problems at a dairy. The report was one of 11 selected for presentation at the AABP’s annual meeting in North Carolina this fall. Students Jennafer Glaesemann of Fairbury, Neb., and Jeffry Faimon of Lawrence, Neb., gave the winning presentation. Last year was the club’s first year in existence–and the first year for the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine–and all club members now are sophomores, making their achievement even more impressive, since their competition was composed of third- and fourth-year students. “This is an exceptional accomplishment because they were competing with the best abstracts selected from veterinary colleges across the U.S. and Canada,” said David Smith, veterinary professor in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. “Further, the case presentations are usually from upper-class students. It is very unusual for students in their first year of veterinary school to be involved in clinical cases.” Six UNL students attended the AABP conference. Chapters are short, the pace is rapid, and the stories are very easy to read–perfect for unmotivated readers. The author’s keen sense of humor will bring smiles to the faces of YAs, particularly when he tells a joke on himself. Nonfiction at its most entertaining best. The late Alf Wight aka James Herriot left a legacy of books that excites readers to this day (and I presume will do so for decades more.) His gentle, self-deprecating style of humor and the portraits of the Yorkshire Dales farmers and country people are amusing and interesting. The four books, named after a hymn "All Creatures Great and Small" are joined by this fifth volume with similar stories. James (as Alf called himself) now has his own practice in Skeldale House, is married with two kids. The stories are very similar to the first four, with goof-ups, miracles, and funny tales. Somehow, these stories are not quite as hilarious as the first set, possibly because Mr. Herriot had written up most of the good stuff, or to represent the seriousness of raising two kids and having his own practice and being a settled man rather than a raw youth just out on his own. Nonetheless, if you lapped up all the "Creature" books, as I did, and you mourn the loss of Dr. Wight, who passed away in the 90’s, then you will want to read these stories and vicariously enjoy more of the daily life of a country vet.
