The use of proper restraint and handling techniques reduces stress to animals and also to the handler. Restraint tool or chemical restraint should be considered for prolonged or potentially painful procedures. The dog can be restrained in lateral recumbency (photo) or in a sitting position for injections and minor procedures.

A shy or fearful dog may need extra time spent with it to make it more comfortable. A highly aggressive dog may have to be tranquilized with acepromazine or handled with a capture stick. To pick up a dog to place it on the table, put one arm in front of the of the animals chest and the other either behind the rear legs, at the level of the stifles or under the abdomen and lift in a “scooping” motion.
