Canine Distemper (Dog Distemper)
Canine distemper is a highly contagious and serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and, often, the nervous systems of puppies and dogs. Puppies and dogs usually become infected through airborne exposure to the virus contained in respiratory secretions of an infected dog or wild animal.
All dogs are at risk but puppies younger than four months old and dogs that have not been vaccinated against canine distemper are at increased risk of acquiring the disease.
The first sign of distemper is eye discharge that may appear watery to pus-like. Subsequently, dogs develop fever, nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, reduced appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. In later stages, the virus may attack the nervous system, bringing about seizures, twitching, or partial or complete paralysis. Occasionally, the virus may cause footpads to harden.
How to prevent Canine Distemper?
Vaccination and avoiding contact with infected animals are key elements of canine distemper prevention.
Vaccination is important. Young puppies are very susceptible to infection, particularly because the natural immunity provided in their mothers’ milk may wear off before the puppies’ own immune systems are mature enough to fight off infection. To protect adult dogs, pet owners should be sure that their dog’s distemper vaccination is up-to-date. Ask your veterinarian about a recommended vaccination program for your canine companion.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) thanks the citizens of California for taking the time to consider and vote on Proposition 2. Now that it’s passed, extra care-and the advice of veterinarians and animal welfare scientists-must be employed to ensure its implementation doesn’t hurt the animals it’s intended to help. “It was encouraging to see voters in California take such an interest in animal welfare,” says Dr. Ron DeHaven, CEO of the AVMA. “Now that the ballot initiative has passed, veterinarians and animal welfare scientists must be involved in its implementation to make sure that resulting changes in animal housing actually improve conditions for the animals they are intended to help. If we’re not careful, animal health and welfare problems could be precipitated that are as significant as the concerns Proposition 2 aspires to address. Close to $16 million was spent by those promoting their views on Proposition 2 in California, which sets new standards for livestock housing in that state. Dr. DeHaven points out that the same investment could have gone a long way toward improving conditions for livestock across the country if it had been used to help develop science-based and practical solutions to animal welfare problems. “We agree that more attention needs to be paid to the behavioral well being of production animals. In doing so, we don’t want to be singularly focused on just providing additional space, as is the case with Prop 2. For example, moving laying hens to free-range production systems may allow them to engage in more species-typical behaviors, but it also increases the hens’ risks of illness and injury because it increases their exposure to disease vectors and predators,” explains Dr. Gail Golab, head of the AVMA’s Animal Welfare Division. Dr. Golab says the AVMA can help California producers protect the welfare of their animals by providing information gained from research at home and abroad on alternative production systems. “We can use this information to help avoid animal welfare pitfalls as we assist California farmers in meeting the requirements of Proposition 2,” Dr. Golab explains. Hungarian scientists are working on computer software analyzing dog barks that could allow people to better recognize dogs’ basic emotions, Hungarian ethologist Csaba Molnar said. Molnar and his colleagues at Budapest’s ELTE University have tested software which distinguishes the emotional reaction of 14 dogs of the Hungarian Mudi herding breed to six situations: When the dog is alone, when it sees a ball, it fights, it plays, it encounters a stranger, or it goes for a walk. “A possible commercial application could be a device for dog-human communication,” the scientist told Reuters. The computer correctly recognized the emotional reaction of the dogs based on their barks and yelps in 43 percent of the cases. People had judged correctly in 40 percent of cases. Scientists said the software could be improved. Molnar said the Hungarian scientists’ research provided further proof that different types of dog barks convey messages humans can understand even if they had no experience with dogs.

Dog Anal Sac Disorders may be caused by androgen stimulation since they occur predominantly in males. Combined androgenic and estrogenic influences may be involved because when they do occur in females, spayed females are more commonly affected than sexually intact females. The others predisposing factors include chronically soft feces, recent diarrhea, excessive glandular secretions, and poor muscle tone; retained secretions may lead to infection and abscessation; small breed dogs, including miniature poodles, toy poodles, and chihuahuas are reportedly predisposed to anal sac carcinoma.
How to diagnose anal sac disorders?
The history and examination of the anal sacs by digital palpation will establish the diagnosis. If easily palpated through the skin, they are considered enlarged. On expression, normal anal sacs fluid is clear or pale yellow-brown. Thick, pasty brown secretion is characteristic of impaction, and creamy yellow or thin green-yellow secretion is often seen in animals with anal sacculitis.
