One of the strongest aspects of this book is that it is written by a paleontologist, and includes many one-page essays by a variety of other paleontologists (accompanied by their photograph and where they work) who speak from their own research. Students interested in the field of paleontology will become familiar with investigation techniques and the excitement of discovery, as well as the fine points of taxonomy, without feeling like they are reading a textbook. The artwork is wonderful, illustrating both comparative anatomy and imaginative scenes from dinosaur life. The writing style is much more readable than the encyclopedic scope might indicate, and is sprinkled with exclamation points (first time I’ve ever seen an exclamation mark in a scientific table!) The book will resist becoming dated because it takes the approach of “how we know what we know and what we don’t know”.

My 7 year old son has had this book for a couple of years and it is still used very often. In fact one of his good friends is himself a walking dinosaur encyclopedia and my son hids this book every time this friend comes over to play. If he doesn’t hid the book his friend spends the entire day reading this book instead of playing with him. His friend has also requested this book for his birthday. Therefore, I highly recommend this book since it is always picked up before any of our other dinosaur books by kids of different knowledge levels…and we have many dinosaur books.

Love it – it’s filled with lots of great facts but easy to get around and locate specific info if you need it. Kids and adults will love this one!

The book is lavishly illustrated throughout all pages with hundreds of stunning new and older paintings and sketches done by renowned paleo-artist Luis Rey. The art is fresh, innovative, colourful and thus sometimes a bit speculative but on the other hand also on the top of scientific knowledge about these animals. I’ve got a lot of fine dinosaur art books but I have to admit that this one will be definetely a favourite one!

So my son was just turning 3 when he fell in love with this book from the library. I had to buy it for him and it is still one of his favorites almost a year later. He loves to see all the pictures and names of the dinosaurs, and as he gets older I’m sure he will enjoy learning more about each one. A must for any dino-lover.

Purchased this book for my seven-year-old son. Althought it’s not specifically a children’s book, it was PERFECT for him because it has so much information on each particular dinosaur–a page or two on each. It is now so worn from use that I may be buying another copy. By far his favorite dinosaur book.
